Public water records and your personal account have different purposes. Here is how this website handles your information.
A clearer perspective.Location search
Place names are matched in your browser against a public location directory. The location button asks your browser for permission only when you choose it. Your coordinates are used on your device to suggest nearby U.S. county overviews; we do not send them to our servers or save them. Nearby suggestions use approximate Census-area centers and do not identify the water system serving your address. You can search by place name without sharing a device location.
The search box that other websites can embed from us works differently: it opens this site in a new tab with the text you typed in the page address (for example ?q=Austin). Our host receives that address like any page request, and your browser keeps it in its history. We remove the search text from the address before analytics events are sent.
The water atlas
When the atlas scrolls into view or you open it, it loads map tiles for the displayed area from Esri World Light Gray Canvas, a basemap served by Esri. If your browser has Data Saver enabled, the map waits for you to open it. Choosing a region or zooming in loads EPA ATTAINS assessments for the displayed area. These services receive the requests needed to show that map area and its public records. When you select a waterbody, your browser downloads a list of county locations from this website and picks the closest county overview on your device. The atlas page keeps the current map view in its address so you can share it; that part of the address is removed before analytics events are sent. The atlas does not request your device location.
Accounts and sign-in
Account sign-in requires your name and email. We use your email to verify that you can access that address and let you sign in. Supabase provides account authentication and stores account and community data. Your email address is not included in public community posts, comments, or profiles. Your chosen public name is saved with your account and appears beside your contributions. Your browser stores a sign-in session so you can move between pages; signing out removes that session.
Public conversations
Your public name, post and comment text, optional state or territory, optional source link, and posting date are public. Posts are associated with an account identifier. Do not include a home address, water account number, private health information, or other information you do not want to publish. You can delete your own posts and comments while signed in. Deleting a post also removes its comments. Changing your public name applies to future contributions; earlier ones keep the name used when published.
Private preferences and reports
Your email briefing preferences and reports about community posts and comments are not available to other users. Site administrators can access this information to operate the service and review reports. Briefings require a separate opt-in; creating an account does not subscribe you. You can turn them off and remove your saved subscription on the Alerts page.
Email delivery
Resend delivers sign-in emails. When outgoing briefings are active, it also delivers the briefings you have separately requested. Delivery records, provider message identifiers, and delivery failures are kept privately to prevent duplicate messages and stop sending to addresses that bounce or report a complaint. Briefing links include a signed unsubscribe token so you can stop these emails without signing in. We do not add your email address to those links or track email opens and clicks.
Operational records
Vercel hosts the website, and Supabase operates the account and database services. Those providers process technical information needed to operate and protect the service. We store posting and reporting activity to enforce abuse limits, including when a post or comment has been deleted. Theme preferences are stored in your browser for the current session.
Recent monitoring observations
When a county monitoring section becomes visible, our service requests public USGS observations using that county code. It checks again every 10 minutes while visible. If Data Saver is enabled, it waits for you to request the readings. We do not send your device coordinates, account details or search text to USGS. Opening an original station link takes you to the USGS website.
Website analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand visits and page views through aggregate statistics, including referring sites, device and browser types, and approximate regions. Vercel Web Analytics does not use cookies. We remove query parameters and URL fragments from page URLs before sending analytics events, except campaign tags such as utm_source that say which shared link or newsletter brought a visit. We do not send your search text, email address, community post contents, or device coordinates as analytics events. Read Vercel's analytics privacy documentation for details about its processing.
We also use Google Analytics to understand website visits and page views. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies to distinguish visitors and sessions. We remove query parameters and URL fragments from the page and referrer URLs supplied to Google Analytics, except campaign tags such as utm_source on the page URL, each cut to 60 characters. We also send Google Analytics events for actions such as searching, choosing a place or a next step, opening an official source, sharing, following, and using the maps. They carry only short labels such as the page type, the kind of place or link, where it sits on the page, the source website and the state; never search text, email addresses or device coordinates. Current availability
Public news, statistics, advisory resources, and the news RSS feed are available without an account. Email-verified accounts can publish questions, posts, and comments. Outgoing email briefings are not active yet. You can save preferences for a future briefing.
